Georgetown Taste Of Africa

This is an excursion which takes you over 300 KM into the Gambia and it also gives you a chance of seeing most parts of the country and seeing very old monuments, the famous Stone Circles for example.

An early departure from your respective hotels where you head straight for the ferry terminal in Banjul for you’re crossing to Barra. Barra is located on the North bank of The Gambia and is the route you will use to get to Georgetown.

Along the way a stop is made at farafenni market (lumo). Lumo is a relatively busy market where loads of local carvings, food and clothing can be seen and bought. Along the way you pass a few villages where the views and sightseeing can be quite spectacular and unique.

After the market…

A stop is made at the Wassu Stone circles where we explain the nature of the stone circles, their history and how they came to exist. Is it believed that these circles were discovered in around 100 BC and discoveries date back up until 750 AD?

From here we head to Kuntaur for a 4 hours boat trip along the River Gambia. Enjoy your lunch while sailing along the mangroves swamps with chance to see hippos, monkeys, crocodiles…
Then, arrive to Jang Jang Burreh Camp for overnight. Jang Jang Burreh Camp is a typical traditional camp, built in African huts style, surroundings by a magnific vegetation, illuminated by , located on the Banks of Mac Carthy Island. After relax and dinner, enjoy the typical folkloric music by the villagers. Dancers will performed various traditions as naming ceremony, marriage, circumcision…

From the North Bank we cross down to the South bank via ferry, which will bring us to Jang Jang Burreh Camp.

On arrival welcome drinks are served before lunch and after everyone has feasted on the lunch prepared, the rooms are given to the guests in order to change and freshen up.

After you have had time to relax we will take a trip to the town of Georgetown where you can see this old town and its unique surroundings. You will also get the chance to visit the local market and buy some souvenirs for friends and family back home.

On our way back to the camp we make a village family visit and visit the ALKALO (head of the village). From the village we return to our camp so that Guest can relax and take shower before the evening entertainment gets under way.

Next Day early morning

The next day, wake up and walk around the camp for bird watching, animal spotting is made. In the camp green velvet monkeys can be seen who normally come to the guests for feeding.
After breakfast, we leave the camp for a stop to visit the village of Georgetown, locally called Jang Jang Burreh.

Jang Jang Burreh (Georgetown) is the name given to the island by a brother and sister who discovered it. Jang Jang Burreh is also the administrative headquarters for the Central River Division, which also has the office and residence of the commissioner. Jang Jang Burreh also had a slave building, which is now converted, into a warehouse. This building was converted after slavery was abolished in 1807.

On the way back, a stop will be done to Farafenni for lunch before reaching Barra for your return journey to Banjul and your respective hotels.
